March 19, 2017
Be sure to save the date- Thursday, March 23rd at 7 pm is the Second Grade Program. Information can be found on the March Newsletter.
February 27, 2017
I will be sending home a March Newsletter this week, as well as the new March homework calendar. Be on the lookout for both in your child's homework binder.
You will also find their recent Reading Test on Inferencing and Summarizing on a label in their agenda. I will record their Social Studies Geography score once they are all completed at the end of this week!
I also will be sending students home tomorrow with math vocabulary flashcards. I created a template that has the vocabulary word and definition, all kids have to do is cut and glue together. I hope this makes studying for vocabulary easier and more effective! I will continue to do this for all future math vocabulary. I would encourage kids to write an example on each card! I will also tell the kids to keep these vocabulary words in a baggie in their homework binder, so they can access them both at school and at home.
I also wanted to remind parents of a great resource students can be using at home called Study Island. Students were sent home with their login and passwords and can gain access thru Fun Websites For All on Montclair's site. This is where we take our reading assessments, so students can be working on practice questions on their own. Our next reading assessment will be on Main Idea in Non-fiction texts/passages, if you would like to practice this skill with your child at home!
Thanks for all you do!!

We are currently working on summarizing in reading class. Students should be practicing this skill at home in their independent books :)
January 18, 2016
It is the middle of the year and we are slowly beginning to run out of kids' scissors and glue sticks. If you have any extra lying around we will gladly take them :) We are also taking donations of "emergency snacks." I normally purchase animal crackers or pretzel rods, a quick and easy snack for those kids who do not have one. As always I truly appreciate your generosity.
Be sure to check your child's homework binder- inside is their new math study guide. I will be sending home their "Friday Folders" tomorrow since there is no school on Friday. Please look over all their quality work and sign their Communication Card. The work can be kept at home and the communication card stays in their folder.

Kids were given their new math vocabulary today. It is in their study guide folder, found in their homework binder. We will be testing on graphing and data next week. Students will get a homework sheet tomorrow to complete. We will also have a test on our Science Unit on Weather. This week we are working on a research project on Severe Storms. In reading, we are currently working on prefixes and suffixes! I encourage the kids to write down any new ones they see and share it with the class the next day.
-PLEASE have your child write down their daily reading every night in their agendas. It teaches them responsibly and accountability. You do not need to sign it unless you'd like to.
-Students should be practicing their addition/subtraction facts daily. Flash cards are great! The kids can also use Math Magician, a great online resource that reinforces those important facts. Be sure to check out our 2nd-grade Symbaloo page!
Thanks for all you do each and everyday.

THANK YOU so much for coming to Back to School Night!!!! I will upload my presentation under "Documents" for any families that were unable to attend.
One error I did make was on the October calendar/newsletter that I passed out tonight- there is No School for kids on October 10th not the 11th! Please send your kiddies in on the 11th :) I will update this and send out a new one with the kids for Monday!
Please sign up for my "Remind page" by following the link below or texting @6bdbg to 81010
I enjoyed meeting with you tonight and look forward to an amazing year in 2nd grade!
Reminder: Science test on Magnets next Friday, kids have a study guide in their HW binder
September 27, 2016- Week 5
During the past few weeks, we launched our reading workshop, building a foundation of reading behaviors that will lead toward success throughout the year. For example, we learned about the importance of choosing good-fit books for the workshop and how to make those choices. As well, we learned several strategies for monitoring for comprehension while reading. These strategies will be reinforced throughout the year as well as many more!
While on the topic of reading, I’ll put in my plug for parent-child reading at home. There are several strategies that parents can pursue with their kids at home that will really build upon classroom reading experiences. Children can read to you, you can read to your child, or your child may read to a sibling. It is SO important they are exposed to reading at home as well as school. Students are required to be recording their reading daily into their agendas! I check their agendas every morning. Please let me know if you’d like me to send your child home with some good-fit books to borrow!
September 19, 2016
This is a friendly reminder to PLEASE check your child's homework binder tonight! We spent the morning getting organized. You will find a letter from me under "Important Papers." Students also received a September Homework calendar, this will replace our weekly calendar and allow you to see what is in store for us each month!
Students also took home their new word study words for the week. They were given two sheets- one sheet was used to cut and sort their words (words are in their word study envelope, found in the front of their book) and the other has directions and an answer key on the back! Part of their homework is to complete a word study activity each night. Be sure to look at the Word Study Contract (which can be found in their notebooks.) Students are expected to complete an activity from the menu Monday-Thursday and return the notebook for a check on Friday. Please make sure your child included the date and the title of the activity he/she chooses to do. Students will receive their notebooks back on Monday's with their new words! I attached the homework calendar and word study contract under the "Homework" tab as well.
I also wrote to remind parents to please send your child in with $5 for agendas, if you have not already done so. We have been waiting until the entire class has one to begin using! It is important children start getting into the habit of using an agenda. I will use the agenda to communicate with you at home. Your child should be recording their daily reading at home into the correct date. Example: On September 19th, students should write the book title they read for homework tonight. I gave each child a "ruler-bookmark" to make it easy to flip open to the correct page! Another use for agendas is recording your child's test scores. After each test is graded I will write on a label your child's score and stick it in the agenda. It is an easy way to make sure you at home are aware of the score. Everyone should have seen their child's Nouns and Characters test score and their Citizenship test score. It was sent home today in their agendas. (If your child does not yet have an agenda, I wrote their score on the letter I sent home.)
I apologize for the lengthy message but wanted to share important information with you before Back to School Night!
I appreciate your support!
September 7, 2016
Hope everyone had a safe and relaxing Labor Day weekend. Please be sure to take a look at your child's homework binder each and every night. It is important they are following their HW menu and completing their Reading Log daily. Monty Folders are taken home on Wednesdays and returned to school the following day. I hope everyone was able to get a chance to check out your child's Quality Guideline Folder, which is sent home every Friday. The kids have been working hard and we are off to a fabulous start in 2nd Grade!!
Be sure to ask them about their SENTENCE BUDDY, we made in class today! Also, please take a look at our 2nd grade webpage- it is filled with many beneficial websites and resources for students to be doing at home!!
Thanks for all your support,
September 1, 2016
We are off to a great start in 2nd grade! Thank you for your support at home. Each month the kids will be sent home with a newsletter and calendar in their homework binder. The newsletter informs you of important events happening here at Montclair (and in Room 108) and our learning focuses. If you ever have any questions please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org. I look forward having your child in my class this year.
- Please have your student come to school with a healthy snack and water bottle each day. We do not eat lunch until 12:00 p.m., and this would greatly help them be ready to learn all day!
- We are also accepting donations of emergency snack items for students who forget theirs (we have 21 students in our class.) Thank you in advance!
- Please make sure to check your child's homework book every night for important notes from school. Thanks!
- On Fridays, students will be sent home with their “Quality” folder, filled with their WONDERFUL work from the week and their communication log. Please sign the communication card and return it in the folder on Monday. The work is theirs to proudly show off.
- Summer Skills packets are due on September 9th (if your child completed this over the summer)
- If you send your child in with lunch money please label the envelope with the child’s first and last name. (This is very helpful! Thank you)
We have been busy learning and getting to know one another!
Math: In math, we are going to explore the hundreds chart and look at the patterns within it. We will focus on strategies to add up to 10 and subtract from 18. We will use our Math Smarts to learn about doubles and related facts.
Language Arts: We have started the year by learning how to pick a right fit book using "I PICK." Ask your student about how they have chosen a just right book this week. We have made meaningful connections with the stories we have read in class and made predictions about what would happen next! We will continue to set a purpose for reading, as well as learn about nouns and pronouns. Please continue to use your Word Smarts and read every day with your student.
Social Studies: We continue to build our classroom community by establishing expectations and routines. We will begin to explore citizenship and the community we live in. We will talk about the voting process and qualities of a good citizen such as: honesty, self-discipline, self-reliance, trustworthiness, and respect. We will use our Montclair lifeskills to help us demonstrate these important citizenship principles.
August 25, 2016
Welcome to the 2nd grade and the beginning of a new school year!
Our school theme this year is “Teaming Up to be Champion Learners!” Everyone has an important position to play on a team. The same is true for my classroom; we are a team of learners—we all learn from each other, help each other, and respect each other. I want you to learn as much as you can in the 2nd grade while also feeling like an important member of the team. With this in mind, we will create our classroom rules and expectations together. Every student will have a weekly classroom job, such as “teacher’s assistant” and “messenger.” We will set class and personal goals, and keep track of class and individual data. We will celebrate our successes and reflect on how to solve problems or make improvements.
To help you prepare for the 2nd grade, I need you to do 2 things before school starts:
- Make sure you have all your school supplies to bring to the Open House or on the first day.
- Complete the “Multiple Intelligences Survey for Students” and bring it to school on the first day. Remember: there are no “right” or “wrong” answers. We are all smart in different ways! (Mailed home)
Again, I look forward to teaching you this year. We will work hard, but also have opportunities for creativity, friendship, and fun. If we all put forth our best effort every day, then we can be successful as individuals and as a team. Enjoy the last few days of summer, and I will see you very soon!
